Technology

For Windows (including VR) and Mac Versions of Nevermind Only

Nevermind is designed to optionally leverage some of the most powerful consumer technology available to make it an unforgettable experience unlike anything you’ve played before.

Nevermind currently interfaces with technology that can read physiological responses, interpret emotional responses, and track eye movement. Soon, we’ll take you inside the world of Nevermind through virtual reality!

Each technology can be used separately and many can be combined—creating a completely unique immersive and responsive gameplay experience.

Physiological Biofeedback (Heart Rate Sensor)

When played with one of Nevermind’s supported heart rate sensors (such as Intel® RealSense™ Technology or the Wild Divine IomPE), the game utilizes heart rate data to detect physiological indications of fear, stress, or tension that the player may feel at any given moment.

Specifically, when played with a pulse detecting device, Nevermind looks at heart rate and heart rate variability to monitor potential elevations in psychological arousal (i.e. how “amped-up” the player is at any given moment). Given that Nevermind is an intense thriller game, the game assumes that these are potential elevations of negative arousal (fear, stress, anxiety, etc.). Nevermind has used heart-rate-based biofeedback since its proof-of-concept in 2011.

Nevermind supports a growing list of multi-purpose sensors that are compatible with both Windows and Mac.

  • Detects indications of changes in physiological responses to the game experience

  • Supports several off-the-shelf heart rate sensors

  • Works great by itself

  • When paired with emotional biofeedback (see below), offers an even more accurate and responsive feeling experience

Emotional Biofeedback (Basic Webcam)

Nevermind senses emotional biofeedback through Affectiva’s Affdex technology, which uses any standard webcam to obtain emotion data based on facial expressions. Available for both Windows and Mac, emotional biofeedback tracking doesn’t require the player to wear any additional technology.

When played with Affectiva’s Affdex technology, Nevermindutilizes facial-reaction data to detect emotional indications of fear, stress, or tension that the player may feel at any given moment.

When playing Nevermind with emotional biofeedback, instead of detecting potential changes in the player’s base “flight or fight” system, as it does with physiological-based biofeedback, the game looks for the end results of the player’s emotional response to intense or uncomfortable moments in the game.

Physiological & Emotional
Biofeedback Combined

When played with both Affdex technology and a heart rate sensor, Nevermind combines both emotional and physiological data for an incredibly responsive biofeedback experience. When Nevermind picks up on a fluctuation in the player’s psychological arousal (detected via a heart rate HR sensor), it can validate whether it is an increase in negative physiological arousal (such as fear or stress) or positive physiological arousal (such as excitement or joy) and, as a result, react in the most appropriate manner.

  • Cross-compatible across several devices (see chart below)

Eye Tracking (Tobii Eye Tracker)

Nevermind
supports eye-controlled interaction when played with a Tobii EyeX eye tracking controller (currently available on Windows only). The Tobii EyeX is not a biofeedback device, although it is compatible with several of Nevermind’s biofeedback technologies.

Eye tracking technology offers even more immersive game input and interaction that unlocks unique gameplay features. These features include, but are not limited to, pausing the game simply by closing your eyes, catching a glimpse of what’s around the corner simply by looking toward the edge of the screen, and a special surprise or two in each level!

NOTE: The sensors listed represent devices compatible with Nevermind as of December 2017. As operating systems, hardware, and computers continue to evolve, please be aware that some of these devices may not work with Nevermind in the future. We will continue to try to ensure that everything remains up-to-date and compatible, but we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate all device compatibility issues that may arise in the future.
