FAQ

Getting the Game

Where can I buy Nevermind

Nevermind is now available for Mac, Windows, and HTC Vive through Steam or the Humble Store and for Oculus Rift through Oculus Home. Keep an eye out for a future announcement on when to expect Nevermind on additional platforms.

How do I download Steam?

If you are unfamiliar with Steam, it is an internet-based gaming and social networking platform developed by Valve Corporation. Steam offers a catalog of PC, Mac, and Linux games (they have over 4,500 games from Action to Indie and everything in-between) and has 125 million active users. To get started, download and install the Steam application by clicking on the green “Install Steam Now” button here and go through the steps to create an account.

On which platforms is Nevermind available?

Nevermind is currently available for Mac, Windows, and HTC Vive through Steam or the Humble Store and for Oculus Rift through Oculus Home. A non-biofeedback enabled version of Nevermind is also available on Xbox One.

If I purchase the VR version of Nevermind, can I play it on "flatscreen?"

Yes, the VR version of Nevermind includes the full “flatscreen” version as well. From Oculus Home, right-click on Nevermind in your Library and select “Start in Desktop Mode.”

Is Nevermind playable on Windows 7?

Nevermind is playable on Windows 7, although it is not fully supported. Windows 7 users may experience some instability. Bluetooth sensor devices, however, will not work on Windows 7 (though an ANT+ Sensor will work with an ANT+ USB Stick).

Unfortunately, due to ratings restrictions, Nevermind is available on Xbox One in only the following regions:

United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Republic of Ireland, Finland Denmark, Portugal, Czech Republic, Israel, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Slovakia, Greece, Poland, Turkey, and Singapore.

If you cannot find Nevermind on the Xbox One store, you may not be in one of the supported regions. However, Nevermind is available in most regions for Windows and Mac on the Steam store.

General Questions

Do I need a biofeedback sensor to play Nevermind?

Although the biofeedback element is at the heart of Nevermind, you can always play Nevermind without ANY biofeedback technology and still have a unique and impactful experience. That said, emotion-based biofeedback is available via almost any standard webcam and, as such, is accessible to most players.

How does biofeedback in Nevermind work?

Nevermind uses biofeedback technology to detect your feelings of stress and anxiety while playing. When you start to experience feelings of fear or anxiety, the game will dynamically respond to your stress levels, which in turn directly affects gameplay. For more information on the biofeedback technology use in Nevermind, please see nevermindgame.com/tech.

Which heart rate sensors are supported by Nevermind?

Nevermind supports a growing number of heart rate sensors for physiological-biofeedback and Affectiva’s Affdex emotion-sensing software for emotional biofeedback (accessible via almost any standard webcam). Different technologies have different pros, cons, and restrictions.

For more information, please visit nevermindgame.com/tech.

For our most up-to-date list of VR-compatible sensors, please visit nevermindgame.com/VR.

Does Nevermind have controller or gamepad support?

Nevermind currently has limited controller support for several controllers (a keyboard is still needed to enter the doctor’s name during the registration process) We currently support a wired USB Xbox 360 Controller, a wired USB Xbox One Controller, Logitech’s RumblePad 2 Controller, Logitech Gamepad F310, and Logitech Gamepad F710 on Windows computers. We are hoping to support additional controllers in a future update, including support for some controllers on Mac.

Do I need headphones to play Nevermind?

While they are not required, we do feel that playing with headphones helps heighten the immersive experience of Nevermind.

Does the Xbox One version of Nevermind use biofeedback?

While the Xbox One edition of Nevermind does not support any biofeedback functionality, the core adventure puzzle gameplay experience of Nevermind can still be enjoyed on the Xbox One platform.

Does biofeedback work in the VR version of Nevermind?

Yes! The VR version of Nevermind supports most of our wearable physiological-biofeedback based sensors. For more information, please visit nevermindgame.com/vr and nevermindgame.com/tech.

Is camera-based biofeedback supported in the VR version of Nevermind?

No. Our currently supported camera-based biofeedback technology needs to “see” a significant portion of the player’s face in order to perceive indications of feelings of fear or stress. Virtual Reality headsets obscure too much of the player’s face to capture sufficient data for camera-based technologies. However, our supported physiological-based heart rate sensors will provide biofeedback response in Nevermind’s VR version.

General Troubleshooting

Why is the camera rotating slowly when I use my controller?

When using a controller, if you find that the movement is fine, but the rotation is slow, open Options and look at “Input.” Increase the mouse sensitivity there until the rotation feels more natural. If you switch back to playing with a mouse, you may need to readjust this.

I'm experiencing very low frame rates. Why is this happening and how can I fix this?

Unfortunately, we’ve found that there is possibly an issue with Unity 5 on machines that have an NVIDIA card and Intel integrated graphics chip. Essentially, instead of rendering on the NVIDIA card, the game tries to render on the Intel integrated graphics card, which results in the very low frame rates you’re seeing.

To our knowledge, there’s nothing we can do from within the game to fix this. However, we have had success with resolving it by tweaking a few settings within the NVIDIA control panel. As such, we recommend trying one of the following methods. The first method, while simple, may impact other programs. If you wish to ensure that only Nevermind is being affected, use the second method.

Simpler – but has a global impact

  • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Go to the “Manage 3D Settings” page (located under the “3D Settings” expandable in the left column of the window).
  • Find the “Preferred Graphics Processor” dropdown within the “Manage 3D Settings” panel. The drop-down box should show “Auto-Select” by default.
  • Change the drop down from “Auto-Select” to “High Performance NVIDIA Processor”
  • Press the “Apply” button that appears in the bottom right corner.

Slightly more complex – but only impacts Nevermind

  • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Go to the “Manage 3D Settings” page (located under the “3D Settings” expandable in the left column of the window).
  • Select the “Program Settings” tab within the “Manage 3D Settings” panel.
  • Check the “Select a program to customize” dropdown menu. If Nevermind is in the list (you can identify it by the Nevermind butterfly icon), select it. If Nevermind is NOT in the list, click the “Add” button. If you’ve run Nevermind recently, it should appear somewhere in the “Add” pop-up window.
  • In the second drop down menu (called “Select the preferred graphics processor for the program”) select the option “High-performance NVIDIA processor.”
  • Press the “Apply” button that appears in the bottom right corner.

Hopefully this helps resolve the issue. As a disclaimer, we have encountered one instance in which the graphics settings would not stick. Unfortunately, at this point in time, we’re at a complete loss as to why that might occur. However, in all the other instances in which we have seen this issue occur, the methods above fixed the problem.

Why is Nevermind running slowly or with a low frame rate on my Windows PC/Mac?

Nevermind is a graphically intense game and therefore will run best on computers that meet our minimum spec system requirements. If you feel the game is running slowly or with a low frame rate, check to see that the computer you are using meets the min spec requirements. If it does meet the requirements and is still running at a low frame rate, navigate to the Graphics menu under Options. Set Graphics to “Low” and reduce the resolution (you may have to set the game to “Windowed.”) If this does not improve performance, please let us a message on the Steam Support forums or email us at support@nevermindgame.com.

Where can I find my version number?

On the Options screen, in the upper right-hand corner.

Sometimes the music and Client voiceover will not play.

We have learned that in very rare instances the music or the client’s voiceover will be silent during the loading (or reloading) of a level. If you are experiencing this issue, simply restart the game. If you still experience this issue, email us at support@nevermindgame.com.

Why does the game sometimes crash if I unplug my USB headphones?

In rare instances, Nevermind may crash if the audio output is changed after the game has been launched (e.g., if you start the game with computer speakers as the audio output and plug in headphones mid-game). This is especially true for 64-bit Windows systems. We are looking into a fix for this issue but, in the meantime, the best solution is to quit Nevermind, plug in your preferred audio output device (i.e., headphones), and restart the game.

Apple Watch

How do I connect the Apple Watch with Nevermind?

For full instructions and suggestions for connecting the Apple Watch with Nevermind, please see our Apple Watch support page: http://nevermindgame.com/applewatch/

I'm having difficulties connecting the Apple Watch with Nevermind.

If you are having difficulties connecting the Apple Watch and Nevermind, please follow these suggestions:

  • Start the Nevermind heartrate app on iOS just before you launch the game on OSX or Windows
  • If playing on Windows, make sure you haven’t started the local Nevermind Companion executable and that it isn’t running (this companion app runs in the system tray on Windows). The local executable will connect to the game and prevent the iOS app from making their necessary connection.
  • Make sure your iPhone and computer are on the same router/network. This may be more difficult in larger business/college campus settings since more complex network setups will make it more difficult for the iPhone and game to find one another on the local network.
  • Make sure someone else nearby or on the same network is not also playing Nevermind. The iOS iPhone app will connect to the first copy of the game it can find, so having multiple copies running may make it difficult to pair an iPhone with an instance of the game. If you need to run multiple copies of Nevermind with multiple copies of the iOS iPhone app, be sure to make pairs one at a time for best results.

If you are still having difficulties with the connection, please email support@nevermindgame.com and we can do our best to figure out the issue and get things working for you from there.

Webcam (Emotion-based Biofeedback)

How do I calibrate or troubleshoot my webcam for biofeedback in Nevermind?

Camera-based technology such as Affectiva’s Affdex technology or Intel® RealSense™ technology can be influenced by environmental conditions such as lighting, camera location relative to the player, and objects in the background. If your camera-based technology hasn’t initialized in the game after a few minutes, please try the following:

  • Double-check to ensure your camera technology has a good, centered view of your face. Once the technology has initialized, you can refine your positioning further in the Options>Input screen.
  • Adjust the lighting in your room. Medium-strength overhead lights tend to work well. Lighting originating from the same height as your face (such as from a desk lamp) can sometimes prove to be problematic—especially if it is reflecting off of something like glasses or if a strong light falls on only one side of your face.
  • Ensure there are no other infrared emitting devices in close proximity of the camera technology.
  • Ensure that reflective surfaces in the background are minimized.

Intel® RealSense™ Technology

Can I buy a standalone Intel® RealSense™ Technology device?

At the 2015 Intel Developer Forum, it was announced that Razer will be working together with Intel to manufacture standalone Intel® RealSense™ Technology Devices. The Razer Stargazer is available for purchase as of September 2016 and is fully compatible with Nevermind and a host of other games and applications. More information can be found at www.razerzone.com/gaming-broadcaster/razer-stargazer.

The Intel® RealSense™ Technology has stopped recognizing my heart rate.

In some instances (particularly on minimum spec requirement systems) Nevermind may run at a low frame rate. During this time, the Intel® RealSense™ Technology heart rate feature may become unresponsive and cease to update heart rate data. If this occurs, navigate to the Graphics menu under Options. Reduce the resolution (you may have to set the game to “Windowed”). If the heart rate still does not register, set Graphics to “Low” and restart the game. If these suggestions do not improve performance, please email us at support@nevermindgame.com.

The Intel® RealSense™ Technology has stopped working in Nevermind.

If your camera is still on even after you quit Nevermind, restart your computer, reopen the Steam application and restart Nevermind.

The Intel® RealSense™ Technology isn't being recognized by my system.

There is a known Intel® RealSense™ DCM driver issue affecting version 1.2.14.28436 which results in the RealSense input failing to reinitialize and sometimes causing stability issues after waking the computer from sleep. To avoid this issue, we recommend updating to the latest version of the Intel® RealSense™ DCM driver. You can find the latest driver at this webpage: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25044/Intel-RealSense-Depth-Camera-Manager-DCM

What's the difference between Intel® RealSense™ Technology and Affectiva's Emotion Technology?

Though both Intel® RealSense™ Technology and Affectiva’s Affdex technology are camera-based, the way they detect biofeedback is significantly different. The Intel® RealSense™ Technology uses the depth sensing and infrared light of a specialized RealSense™ camera to detect subtle changes in your pulse as you play. From this pulse, Nevermind is able to estimate your physiological responses to stress and anxiety. Affectiva’s Affdex technology, on the other hand, uses a standard webcam to read facial recognition and determine your emotional responses to fear and anxiety.

How do I calibrate or troubleshoot my Intel® RealSense™ Technology camera?

Garmin Chest Strap

When I play with a Garmin Chest Strap, I'm seeing a message about needing a Vivofit or Forerunner device. Do Ineed these for Nevermind to work?

No, you do not. You may be seeing the message about needing one of these extra devices since most non-Nevermind players use the Garmin chest strap in conjunction with a Garmin watch (so the default Garmin software sometimes assumes that you want to pair the chest strap with a Garmin watch device). For Nevermind, you do not need to purchase anything outside of the ANT+ stick and Garmin chest strap.

The Garmin/ANT+ sensor isn't working. What should I do?

Sometimes the connection between the Garmin Chest Strap and Nevermind stops functioning. Here are several troubleshooting steps to take in that instance.

ANT+ Agent/Garmin Express

The first thing to check is if the ANT+ Agent or Garmin Express programs are running at the same time as Nevermind. These are apps that Garmin uses to transfer data from the heart rate strap to and from your computer. There is a known issue in which these apps sometimes conflict with Nevermind’s own search for the heart rate signal.

USB 2.0 Port

The ANT+ stick tends to connect more efficiently when placed in a USB 2.0 Port (as opposed to a USB 3.0 Port). If your machine supports both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0, try placing the ANT+ stick in the USB 2.0 port.

Quitting the ANT+ Agent/Garmin Express should allow Nevermind to access the ANT+ USB stick and get your heart rate. Once you quit the app, launch Nevermind and, after the startup screens, go into Options/Sensors. If the connection is working properly, you’ll see it start to pull data from the Garmin Chest Strap. If not, the screen will say “No Sensor.”

Nevermind Heart Rate Companion App

If quitting the ANT+ Agent/Garmin Express program doesn’t fix the issue, the second thing to check is what the Nevermind Heart Rate Companion App is reporting back. To access the companion app, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go into Steam and right-click on Nevermind.
  2. Select “Properties.”
  3. Select the “Local Files” tab.
  4. Press the “Browse Local Files…” button.
  5. This will open a folder on your desktop in which you’ll find the “HeartrateCompanion” folder.
  6. Open that folder and run the “Nevermind HeartrateCompanion” application inside it.
  7. Make sure the ANT+ is plugged in and that you’re wearing the sensor.
  8. Launch the app.
  9. Select the ANT+ tab

When you select the ANT+ tab, you’ll see two circles. If everything is working correctly, both will be green. If not, one or both of the circles will be red with an “x” inside. Please email support@nevermindgame.com with the results and we can do our best to figure out the issue and get things working for you from there.

I have a specific question about the Garmin Chest Strap and ANT+.

Polar H7

The Polar H7/Bluetooth sensor isn't working. What do I do?

Sometimes the connection between the Polar H7 or other Bluetooth sensor and Nevermind stops functioning. Here are several troubleshooting steps to take in that instance

The first thing to check is if the Polar H7 or other Bluetooth sensor is paired correctly with Windows.

Pairing the Polar H7 with Bluetooth through Windows

First, make sure that you’re wearing the sensor so it’s detecting a heart rate. Pair the Polar H7 to the computer by selecting “Add a Bluetooth Device” within the Windows Operating System’s Bluetooth utility. The Bluetooth utility can be accessed in the System Tray.

Once Windows reports that the Polar H7 is paired and connected, the Nevermind Heart Rate Companion App should be able to scan and locate it from there, but it does not hurt to double-check.

Nevermind Heart Rate Companion App

To access the companion app, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go into Steam and right-click on Nevermind.
  2. Select “Properties.”
  3. Select the “Local Files” tab.
  4. Press the “Browse Local Files…” button.
  5. This will open a folder on your desktop in which you’ll find the “HeartrateCompanion” folder.
  6. Open that folder and run the “Nevermind HeartrateCompanion.exe” application inside it.
  7. Look for the Heartrate Companion icon to appear in the System Tray. Double-click on it to open the window.
  8. In the Bluetooth section, you’ll see two circles, Antenna and Sensor Status. You should also see the Polar H7 listed under “Devices.” Click on the Polar H7 Device to initialize the connection. That row should turn blue and the code should attempt the connection.

If everything is working correctly, both will be green and you should see the device listed under “Devices.” If not, one or both of the circles will be red with an “x” inside. Please email support@nevermindgame.com with the results and we can do our best to figure out the issue and get things working for you from there.

Wild Divine IomPE

Is the Wild Divine original Iom Sensor supported by Nevermind?

At this moment, no, the original Wild Divine Iom Sensor is not officially supported by Nevermind.

Why isn't my Windows 10 Pro computer recognizing the Wild Divine IomPE in Nevermind?

We have discovered that Windows 10 Pro users may have an issue wherein Nevermind does not recognize the WildDivine Iom PE sensor in-game. This does not seem to be an issue with Windows 10 Home users, however.

If you are a Windows 10 Pro user who is experiencing this issue:

  • Download and install this driver
  • After installation, plug the WildDivine IomPE sensor into your USB port as usual
  • Launch Nevermind.

The game should now recognize the sensor and operate normally.

NOTE: This issue is not a concern on other versions of Windows (Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 Home) or on Mac OS X. For those operating systems, the WildDivine should work simply by plugging the sensor into a USB port before launching Nevermind. The download and installation of this driver is not necessary on those operating systems.

I have specific questions about the Wild Divine IomPE.

You can find more information is available about the Wild Divine IomPE at Wild Divine’s FAQ page here.

Mio Link

Before launching the game, pair the Mio Link to the computer by selecting “Add a Bluetooth Device” within the Windows Operating System’s Bluetooth utility. The Bluetooth utility can be accessed in the System Tray.

Once Windows reports that the Mio Link is paired and connected, go ahead and launch the game. The Nevermind Heart Rate Companion App should be able to scan and locate it from there.

If you still experience any trouble with pairing the device, don’t hesitate to contact us at support@nevermindgame.com.

Please make sure that the Mio Link device is well charged. Several users have experienced the Mio Link failing to properly connect when the battery isn’t charged.

Nevermind Heart Rate Companion App If charging the Mio Link doesn’t fix the issue, the second thing to check is the what the Nevermind Heart Rate Companion App is reporting data back to the game.

  7. If you’re using an ANT+ device (instead of using Bluetooth), ensure that it is plugged in and that you’re wearing the sensor.
  8. Launch the app.
  9. Select the ANT+ section if you are connecting the sensor via ANT+ or the Bluetooth section if you are connecting the sensor via Bluetooth.

When you select the appropriate section, you’ll see two circles. If everything is working correctly, both will be green. If not, one or both of the circles will be red with an “x” inside. Please email support@nevermindgame.com with the results and we can do our best to figure out the issue and get things working for you from there.
